David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Week 15
April 7, 2002 to April 13, 2002

  Monday April 8, 2002

I prepare my own taxes and file as a sole proprietor. Today, I have concentrated on learning more about corporations and to learn about whether it would be to my benefit to incorporate. If any of you know about incorporating or know a good business consultant, please let me know.

I finally tasted seriously the 2001 wines out of the barrel the other night. It was much too late, but what I remember (I didn't take notes) is that I was real pleased with all the wines. I preferred the Estate Cuvee over all the wines. The Aca Modot with all the new oak was more typical of all those expensive competitors out there (great concentration). The Terre Melange surprised me with its intensity while the Petite Sirah was more straight forward, but just as intense with dark berry flavors. The Carignan was also straight forward, but with more dark cherry and jammy character. The Block 4 was very much like the 2000, which I mentioned last week. The Zinfandel has much darker flavors compared to the 2000 and all I could expect in a great year. All these wines should last 10 years or more.
