David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Week 30
July 21, 2002 to July 27, 2002

Friday July 26, 2002

Many of the grape growers in this Sonoma County are worrying about the weather as usual. Our daytime highs have been below normal and the fog has stayed in somewhat longer. As you may have noticed, we have been getting into the upper 80's, just slightly below normal, but Russian River and southern Sonoma have had some cool days. I feel we may be a week or two behind now, but that could change soon with some warmer highs.

Some berries on all our grape bunches have started turning color. I believe the crop load now appears to be in balance after thinning aggressively three weeks ago. Right now I expect to harvest Sauv Blanc in the last few days of August. The Zin could be delayed till the second week in September. I am encouraged that it seems that I will be able to make a barrel of Mourvedre and a few barrels of Petite Sirah from our new vines. We also have a small amount of Syrah and Cabernet in this new area over by the pond. We have made a tentative decision to remove most of our Sauv Blanc vines this fall and replant to Petite Sirah and Cabernet. I hope to keep a small amount to produce about 300 cases for the winery. Our long term plans are to buy no fruit and to sell no fruit.

We have been open for tasting the last two weekends. It has been surprising that Sunday has been our busiest day and afternoons have been crowded. Videos have been running all the time and will continue this weekend. Next Saturday the 3rd of August we will be open also and then on the 4th we leave for 10 days to head down to Southern California to visit Universities. Kate will be a senior this Fall.

We were pouring all of our wines the first weekend and sold out of the 2001 Block 4 again. Last Saturday we sold out of our Aca Modot. We continue to sell the 2001 Petite Sirah, Syrah and Pinot. Those wines were sold out previously and are not included on our website order form. Of those three, the Pinot has sold the most. Overall for the last two weekends our Estate Cuvee has sold the most followed by the Carignan and Terre Melange.
