I wanted to start a thread with the objective of generating a discussion
about what consumers feel are the unique qualities that make Dave’s wines
so enjoyable to drink. Whether your favorite is the carignane, the
estate cuvee, the neighbor’s cuvee, the petite sirah, or the zinfandel,
what is it about Dave’s wine that makes it stand out from the pack.
Remember, we all have different palates and noses, and whatever we write
here is ultimately subjective. Whether you
think of yourself as a novice or an experienced winedrinker, I would
like to hear what you like most about your favorite David Coffaro wine.
I’ll start with what I love about the zinfandel. Dry Creek Valley has always been the home of many of my favorite zinfandels because of the blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry fruit that often typifies the zins from this region. Each of the 5 Coffaro zins I have tasted, 94-98, of course have shown these qualities. What is unique about Dave’s treatment of the wine is his minimal use of new oak. Coffaro Estate zin grapes also have very soft tannins. Thus the fruit essence of Dry Creek zin is both the major aroma and palate impression. I find that I love to drink this wine within a few months of bottling for the intense fruitiness. Sometimes, as in 97, the fruit is almost too intense at first. I have already had 6 or 7 bottles of the 97 zin, and the last 2 were just outstanding in my opinion, ranking with the most fruity zins I have ever drank. I am certain that other zins, may have more fruit extract, but always at the cost of significant tannins. Dave’s ability to make Coffaro zin with so much fruit and so little tannin, allows it to be consumed fresh and young, when zinfandel’s fruity exuberance is most pronounced.
